If you are interested in replacing or covering up an existing tattoo with another tattoo, it's good to know that the cover-up will be much more successful when the existing tattoo is first faded out through the tattoo removal process. Fading the old tattoo will give the tattoo artist a better 'canvas' to work on and much more flexibility with the new design, as the old design won't be showing through. Below is the first of three photo sequences displaying examples of the fading process.

Client desires to fade five amateur (done in a garage) cover-up tattoos in preparation for a professional dragon tattoo. The five tattoos were applied in Los Angeles over a four year time frame. The last tattoo was applied two weeks ago, which resulted in scarring and infection. Healing will delay the laser treatment two weeks.
After 2 laser treatments, ink is reduced 50%. Most normal tattoos would only require 1-2 treatments to fade for the perfect cover-up. This tattoo will require more treatments due to the heavy ink and style of the desired cover-up art.
Two more laser treatments have smoothed out the scarring and further reduced the ink, revealing a more natural skin tone. This tattoo will require a total of 5 laser sessions spaced 8 weeks apart. This will provide enough fading for the dragon art.
After the 5th treatment, the tattoo is now ready for the cover-up. If the client had wanted complete removal, it would have required 2-3 more treatments. Skin texture is much improved.
After several consultations, the client selected a tattoo artist to create the "Dragon of his Dreams." Note the design lines and attention to detail. There will be no disappointments.
First sitting: Tattoo comes to life! Notice the artist's excellent choice of color, blended rich warm tones that complement the client's fair skin.
Second sitting: The new looks clean and fresh with absolutely no trace of the previous 5 amateur tattoos. The client is thrilled! One year ago he would not take his shirt off. With the combination of laser technology and skilled artistic craftsmanship, this client's expectations have been exceeded.
